Oxygen

On feedback and building in the open

"…every moment you're working on something without it being in the public…it's actually dying, deprived of the oxygen of the real world

Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of WordPress

One of the best things about Spark was that it was not built in a vacuum.

It had oxygen from Day 1 - thanks to the two high-school online tutors and their 100+ students we've been building it with.

We had feedback at every crucial juncture.

For example, here's feedback from a couple of 8th graders:

Feedback from 8th graders on the quiz feature

I loved this for two reasons:

  1. It surfaced a product gap: we need the "skip question" feature.

  2. It's proof that these students are deeply engaged while taking the quiz.

The Pareto principle tells us that 80% of users typically rely on 20% of features.

Great product teams obsess over that 20%.

That's exactly what we've been doing with the quiz..which increasingly looks like one of Spark's core features.

Quiz: Features & improvements

We've just released a flurry of improvements. Here's a summary:

  • Topic based quizzes: You already know Spark can generate quizzes from a specific video. Now, you can select a topic instead: Spark automatically pulls relevant content across multiple videos and generates a quiz from it.

New feature: "Across videos" quizzes

  • "Fire & forget" quiz generation: Generate quizzes in the background. No more waiting. You'll get an email when it's ready.

    New feature: Background quiz generation

  • Parallel quiz generation: "Fire and forget" not one but multiple quizzes at once.

  • Longer quizzes: Want 20, 30 or more questions? Spark can now do this without timing out.
